Nuland spoke after a meeting with military leaders of the takeover in Niger’s capital, Niamey. She stressed the importance of returning democracy and warned that if this does not happen, the U.S. could legally cut off most of its assistance, including military aid.

The coup has resulted in President Mohamed Bazoum being detained along with his family. The coup leaders have closed Niger’s airspace, citing threats of foreign attack.
