BREAKING: Disgrace As Ex-footballer Sunday Eboh Jailed Abroad For €58,000 Romance Fraud (DETAILS)

Prominent retired local footballer, Sunday Eboh, has been sentenced to three years in jail and fined €20,000.

He was convicted, alongside fellow Nigerian Tony Ogbonna, for their involvement in a romance fraud scheme that cost an elderly Maltese widow €58,700. Eboh, Collins Eguavoen, Marvis Iyeke, and Tony Ogbonna, along with Maltese national Alexandra Pace, were arrested in 2021.

The court also ordered Ogbonna to serve 28 months and Eboh to repay the woman within six months. Both men were directed to pay €2,572.57 each in costs.

The men’s assets in Malta and abroad were forfeited, and their expulsion from the country was recommended. Alexandra Pace was fined €200.

Eguavoen and Iyeke had pleaded guilty earlier and were given suspended two-year sentences and fines. The victim, an elderly Maltese woman, was deceived into an online relationship with someone posing as an American soldier deployed in Afghanistan.

She was swindled after being told a story about a man named “Tony Montana,” whom Eboh claimed to have met. The victim transferred a total of €58,700, but €10,000 was later refunded.

The court noted that Eboh failed to provide a credible explanation for how he came into possession of the money and observed that his lifestyle was inconsistent with his lawful income.

The court stated that Eboh and Ogbonna were “material co-participants and co-authors in the money laundering offence as well as handling stolen goods.” The men’s lawyers have indicated their intention to appeal.
