Lawyers representing the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, have expressed concern that the Department of State Service (DSS) is planning to re-arrest their client despite the bail granted to him by a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Joseph Daudu, the lead counsel for Emefiele, raised this alarm after the court’s ruling on Tuesday. Earlier that day, Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N20 million and ordered that he be remanded at the correctional center until the bail conditions are fulfilled.

Shortly after the ruling, DSS operatives positioned their Hilux Pick Up van, which was used to bring Emefiele to court, in a manner that suggested they intended to take him back to their detention center.

This action prompted Daudu and other lawyers representing Emefiele to raise concerns about their client’s potential re-arrest by the secret police.

At the time of reporting, the suspended CBN governor was still inside the courtroom with his lawyers. Outside the court, a group of concerned lawyers also spoke to journalists about the issue, expressing their worries over the DSS’s plan.
