Breaking: FCCPC Calls Multichoice To Account For Controversial Subscription Increase
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called upon MultiChoice Nigeria to explain its decision to increase subscription prices for its cable TV services. This price hike is set to take effect from March 1, 2025…….READ MORE
According to reports, MultiChoice will attend an investigative hearing at the FCCPC headquarters on Thursday, February 27, 2025. The commission is concerned about the regular price increases faced by Nigerian consumers and has raised alarms over possible market dominance abuse, anti-competitive behavior, and the lack of fair pricing in the pay-TV industry.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ondaje Ijagwu, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, emphasized that the commission is committed to ensuring that Nigerians are not exploited by unreasonably frequent price hikes. He stated that if MultiChoice fails to provide satisfactory explanations, or is found to be violating fair market practices, the FCCPC will impose necessary regulatory penalties or sanctions to safeguard consumers.
Previously, it was reported that MultiChoice intends to increase the subscription fee for its DStv Compact package by 21%, raising the price from ₦15,700 to ₦19,000, effective March 1, 2025. This increase follows a similar hike in May 2024, which MultiChoice attributed to inflation and rising operational costs.
