In a landmark decision revealed during the 139th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the government signaled its intent to fortify farm security through innovative measures. This pivotal decision underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering agricultural productivity and protecting farmers from the pervasive threat of insecurity.

The NEC meeting, held virtually, delved into critical issues affecting the agricultural sector, with a primary focus on ensuring the availability of fertilizers to enhance agricultural output. Recognizing fertilizers as a linchpin for agricultural success, the council underscored the imperative for state governors to adopt modern agricultural practices to elevate productivity levels.

Vice President Shettima’s directive for a high-level engagement with key fertilizer producers, including Indorama, Dangote, and Notore, underscores the government’s proactive approach to addressing agricultural challenges.

Furthermore, the NEC explored both short-term and long-term strategies to confront security threats faced by farmers. The proposed establishment of Agro-Rangers in the short term and the potential creation of state police in the long term reflect a concerted effort to mitigate security risks and ensure the safety of farming communities.
