Gunmen have bombed the Ihiala Police Divisional Headquarters in Anambra State’s Ihiala Local Government Area in south-east Nigeria.

Residents told Premium Times that the attack happened around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The gunmen allegedly threw improvised explosive devices into the facility, destroying a building inside the station.

Uju Okafor, a local, said the bombings and sporadic shootings by the gunmen kept them awake during the attack.

“I was very scared when I started hearing of the heavy shootings and bomb explosions,” she said.

Mr Okafor stated that it wasn’t until later in the morning that they realized the attack had taken place at the police station.

Chinonso Okoye, another local, told Premium Times that the gunmen released some inmates during the attack.

“It was very early this morning that the gunmen started shooting and throwing bombs. We heard they released some people in the police cell,” he said.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson in Anambra State, confirmed the attack in a statement on Wednesday.

Mr Ikenga, a deputy superintendent of police, stated that during the attack, some police operatives engaged the gunmen in a shoot-out and recovered one Ak-47 rifle.

He stated that no one was killed in the incident and that the gunmen “escaped the scene due to superior firepower” of the operatives.

“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station building had already ignited a fire and affected the building,” he said.

However, a police spokesperson stated that the fire had been extinguished.

When asked if the gunmen released any inmates during the attack, Mr Ikenga replied, “yes, and we are now on their trail.”
