BREAKING: How Akpabio Stopped El-Rufai From Addressing ‘Strong Petition’ On Kaduna Insecurity

During the ministerial screening exercise at the Senate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio prevented former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, from addressing a “strong petition” raised against him.

El-Rufai, who is on President Bola Tinubu’s 28-man ministerial list, was asked about his plans for the power sector by Senator Abdulaziz Yari. However, Senator Ibrahim Khalid urged his colleagues to allow El-Rufai to take a bow without further questioning, as was done with other ex-governors during their screenings.

Senator Karimi Sunday then brought up a petition against El-Rufai concerning insecurity, unity, and national cohesion. The majority of the lawmakers opposed discussing the petition, and Senator Muhammad Sani suggested that El-Rufai be allowed to take a bow like other former governors.

El-Rufai responded to Yari’s question by suggesting that amendments to the Electricity Act 2023 and the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 might be necessary to improve the power sector.

Later, when El-Rufai attempted to address the petition against him, the Senate President intervened and explained that dealing with petitions was not part of the screening process. He suggested that petitions could be referred to the Presidency or security agencies for further review. The Senate President then asked El-Rufai to take a bow, and he left the chamber.

Kaduna, which was governed by El-Rufai, experienced a high number of killings and kidnappings during his tenure. The state faced numerous security challenges, including attacks by bandits, terrorists, and armed men, resulting in significant loss of lives and abductions.
