In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, the court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, stated that the ICC is also seeking warrants for Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and two other top Hamas leaders: Mohammed Deif, leader of the Al Qassem Brigades, and Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’ political leader.

This move marks the first time the ICC has targeted a top leader from a close U.S. ally, putting Netanyahu alongside figures like Russian President Vladimir Putin, who also faces an ICC arrest warrant. The charges against Netanyahu and Gallant include causing extermination, causing starvation as a method of war, and deliberately targeting civilians. Charges against Sinwar, Haniyeh, and Deif include extermination, murder, and taking hostages.

A panel of ICC judges will now review Khan’s application for the arrest warrants. This development is separate from the ongoing case at the International Court of Justice concerning accusations of genocide against Israel. The ICC operates independently from the ICJ and focuses on individual criminal accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity. If the warrants are issued, member countries of the Rome Statute would be obligated to arrest and extradite the individuals to The Hague.
