A 30-year-old teacher at Landmark School Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Faith Nwonye, has been arrested for allegedly beating an eight-year-old pupil into a coma….CONTINUE READING
Anambra State’s Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, announced on Monday that the state government has permanently shut down the school.
Chuma-Udeh explained that she had summoned the school’s proprietor and Nwonye to account for the incident that led to the brutalization of the primary two pupil. She emphasized that the school was closed not only because of this incident but also due to its illegal status.
She said, “We received this unfortunate report from an illegal school in Mgbakwu where a child was beaten into a coma over the weekend. On behalf of the State Government, we summoned the proprietress of the illegal school as well as the teacher involved. The matter has been handed over to the police for further investigation, as we await directives from the Governor. Meanwhile, the school is closed indefinitely because it was operating illegally. Any parent enrolling their child in an illegal school does so at their own risk.”
“To the proprietors of private schools, anyone running an unapproved school in Anambra is committing a crime. It’s a criminal offense to operate an illegal school in the state.”
Chuma-Udeh expressed sadness over the incident and lamented that the chances of the victim’s survival, currently hospitalized, were only 20 percent according to the attending doctor.
“Whether the school is legal or not, it’s criminal to beat a child. The doctor stated that the child’s chances of survival are 20%,” she stated.
She warned that those responsible would face severe consequences, noting that the teacher would be held accountable.
“As soon as the police conclude their investigation, the teacher will face additional legal actions regarding child rights violations. She will face the full wrath of the law for her actions. Anambra state abhors violence against children, women, and any other person. It’s not part of this administration’s values, and the Governor is firmly against such behavior,” she added.
