BREAKING: Kano Assembly Starts Process To Impeach Deputy governor

The Kano State House of Assembly has officially initiated impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust, according to Ireporter Online.

The impeachment notice was formally presented on the Assembly floor by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Dala, who stated that the action aligns with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). The notice outlines several allegations relating to Abdussalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024, as well as his current duties as deputy governor.

According to Dala, the charges include the diversion of local government funds, abuse of office, and other actions considered impeachable under the constitution. He alleged that while overseeing the state’s 44 local government councils as commissioner, the deputy governor engaged in misappropriation of funds intended for local government operations.

The notice also accuses Abdussalam of abuse of office and gross misconduct, which Dala described as serious violations of constitutional provisions or ethical standards expected of public officials. He emphasized that the alleged actions represent a fundamental breach of both constitutional norms and public trust.

Dala further revealed that 38 lawmakers endorsed the impeachment notice, fulfilling the constitutional requirement to initiate the process. He urged the Speaker to transmit the notice to the deputy governor in accordance with legal procedures.

“Based on the foregoing allegations, we hereby resolve that His Excellency, Aminu Abdussalam, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, be impeached and removed from office under Section 188 of the Constitution,” Dala declared. Following the presentation, Assembly members expressed their support for the notice.

The Speaker acknowledged receipt of the document and is expected to formally communicate the allegations to the deputy governor as mandated by constitutional procedures. As of the time of reporting, the deputy governor has not publicly responded to the accusations.
