BREAKING: Military Rulers Announce Coup Attempt In Burkina Faso (DETAILS)

The intelligence and security services of Burkina Faso successfully thwarted a coup attempt against the country’s military rulers, as announced by authorities.

In a statement on Wednesday, Burkina Faso’s military leaders disclosed that army officers and others had conspired to seize power with the intention of causing “chaos” in the nation. Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, the spokesperson for the ruling military, stated that those implicated in this destabilization attempt have been apprehended, and others are actively being pursued. However, specific details were not provided.

This coup endeavor took place on Tuesday, according to the official statement. The military government expressed its commitment to shed light on this plot and expressed regret that officers, whose duty is to protect their homeland, engaged in such an endeavor.

Subsequently, the country’s military prosecutor reported that four individuals have been apprehended, while two remain at large. An investigation has been initiated based on credible allegations of a plot against state security involving officers.

Earlier this month, the military prosecutor announced the arrest of three soldiers charged with plotting against the ruling military government led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who assumed power in September 2022, eight months after a previous military coup ousted democratically elected President Roch Marc Kabore.

Following the announcement of the attempted coup, Burkina Faso’s capital city, Ouagadougou, appeared calm on Wednesday evening. Thousands of demonstrators in support of the military government took to the streets of Ouagadougou and other locations on Tuesday, responding to Traore supporters’ call to “defend” him amidst rumors of a mutiny circulating on social media.

Earlier this week, French news magazine Jeune Afrique was temporarily suspended from publishing what the military deemed an “untruthful” article reporting on tension and discontent within the armed forces.

Burkina Faso is among a growing number of West African countries where the military has taken control due to public discontent amid a rebellion led by armed groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS. This has caused destabilization in Burkina Faso and its neighboring regions in West Africa’s Sahel region.

The conflict has displaced over two million people in Burkina Faso, making it one of the most severe internal displacement crises in Africa. Recently, authorities claimed that nearly 192,000 internally displaced individuals had returned to their homes after various regions were reclaimed by government forces. However, rebel attacks persist, despite assertions of territorial gains by the military.

In early September, over 50 Burkinabe soldiers and volunteer fighters were killed in clashes with rebels, marking the highest casualties in months. These deaths add to the thousands of civilians and troops who have lost their lives in rebel attacks in recent years, according to organizations monitoring the conflict.
