Breaking: National Assembly Acknowledges Involvement in Rivers State Emergency Declaration

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, Rotimi emphasized that both chambers of the National Assembly were engaged in discussions prior to the announcement.

He disclosed that key legislative leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Senate Leader Michael Bamidele, and House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, participated in meetings with President Tinubu and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

Rotimi stated, “In response to multiple inquiries, I can confirm that the National Assembly was duly consulted by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, before this decision was made.”

He further revealed that high-ranking security officials, including the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Adeola Ajayi, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Mohammed, were also present during the deliberations.

According to Rotimi, the National Assembly leadership was fully briefed on the president’s intentions and expressed unanimous support for the decision.

Additionally, President Tinubu has formally communicated his decision to the House of Representatives, in line with Section 305 of the Constitution, seeking legislative approval. The matter is scheduled for deliberation in plenary on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
