BREAKING: Niger Coup Plotters Make Fresh Appointment

A spokesperson for the military junta made this announcement on television late on Monday night.

Lamine Zeine previously served as the economy and finance minister for multiple years in the cabinet of then-president Mamadou Tandja, who was removed from power in 2010.

He most recently worked as an economist for the African Development Bank in Chad, as reported by Nigerien media.

In late July, the military ousted democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum and suspended the country’s constitution, impacting its population of around 26 million.

During Bazoum’s tenure, Niger had stood as a significant partner of the West in countering the advancement of Islamist extremists in the Sahel region.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) issued an ultimatum to the coup plotters to reinstate Bazoum, which expired over the weekend. The ultimatum warned of potential measures, including the use of force.

In response, the prime ministers of ECOWAS member states are scheduled to convene in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on Thursday to deliberate on the subsequent steps to take.
