[BREAKING] Niger Coup: President Bazoum Speaks From Detention (DETAILS)
Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, who was forcibly removed from power by his guards last Wednesday, spoke out on Friday after nine days of being held hostage.
Mr. Bazoum stated that there is no valid reason for the coup that led to his ouster and detention. He condemned the military faction responsible for the coup and emphasized that any attempt to overthrow a legitimate government must be resisted.
He also expressed gratitude for the international community’s condemnation of the coup and their support for Niger’s democratic progress.

Addressing the claims made by the coup leaders and their supporters about the country’s economic and security situation, Mr. Bazoum asserted that Niger is actually the safest it has been in 15 years, thanks to the partnerships with development partners that the coup leaders oppose.
He warned of the dangers the coup poses for the Sahel region, as extremist groups like Boko Haram could take advantage of the instability to launch attacks and spread anti-Western indoctrination.
Mr. Bazoum further criticized Mali and Burkina Faso for supporting the coup and using Russian mercenaries to address security concerns, instead of building their own capacity.
He called on the US government and the international community to help Niger restore constitutional order and uphold democratic values.
