A woman was apprehended attempting to smuggle over 45,000 cigarettes from Nigeria to Glasgow, supposedly as a “wedding gift.”

Oluwafemi Aina was taken into custody at Glasgow Airport in February 2019, following her arrival on a flight from Amsterdam, having previously traveled from Nigeria to Paris.

The 45-year-old contended that the stash of 45,400 Benson and Hedges cigarettes was purchased in Nigeria as a present for a friend’s wedding.

After a trial held at Paisley Sheriff Court on October 19, Aina was convicted and received a sentence of 300 hours of unpaid work to be fulfilled within a year.

Lynsey Thompson, who leads HMRC’s fraud investigation service, emphasized, “Inexpensive cigarettes frequently finance organized crime and other illicit activities that inflict genuine harm on our communities. We are resolute in our efforts to eradicate tobacco fraud, working in close collaboration with our partners in the Serious Organised Crime Taskforce at the Scottish Crime Campus.”
