Breaking: Ondo Protesters Block Access Insist On Change In Electoral Leadership
A large crowd of protesters from Ondo State has gathered at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, demanding the immediate reassignment of Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola..…..CONTINUE READING
The demonstrators carried banners with messages like “Mahmood: Redeploy Babalola Now” and “We Don’t Want a Repeat of Edo Fiasco,” effectively blocking access to the national office. They are seeking a meeting with INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to voice their concerns.
This protest follows a similar call made by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who raised concerns about Babalola’s alleged connections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). At a recent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rally in Akure, Makinde emphasized that Babalola’s local ties could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.
Ayo Adeyemi, the leader of the protesters and Convener of the Ondo Youth League, stated, “While we respect Babalola’s accomplishments, we cannot overlook any potential bias in the upcoming election.” He further urged INEC to act in the best interest of the people to ensure a fair electoral process.
In response to the protesters, INEC National Commissioner, Major General Modibbo Alkali (retd), commended their disciplined approach and assured them that their concerns would be thoroughly reviewed. “INEC operates impartially, without alignment to any political party or candidate,” he stated. “We’ve received your letter, and we will consider it carefully.”
