Breaking: Tinubu In Crucial Meeting With Dangote And Kyari To Reshape Nigeria’s Petrol Landscape
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently receiving updates from the Implementation Committee on Crude Oil and Refined Products Sales in Local Currency at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Chaired by Finance Minister Wale Edun, the committee includes Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, and Mele Kyari, Group CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC)……..CONTINUE READING
The committee members arrived at the Council Chamber shortly after 2:00 PM.
This meeting follows the Federal Government’s recent policy shift, which allows the sale of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery in naira instead of U.S. dollars—a decision approved by the Federal Executive Council.
The Federal Government aims to stabilize domestic fuel prices and strengthen Nigeria’s currency by decreasing reliance on the dollar for oil transactions.
Under this new policy, the NNPC is authorized to supply crude oil in naira, starting with the Dangote Refinery as the initial pilot project.
Officials anticipate that conducting transactions in the local currency will improve the availability of petroleum products and lower import-related costs.
Given its significant demand for crude oil, the Dangote Refinery is expected to reciprocate by selling petrol and diesel in naira, thereby simplifying currency exchanges and easing the financial burden associated with fuel imports.
Government projections suggest this initiative could reduce foreign exchange (FOREX) demands by up to 40 percent, with backing from the Central Bank of Nigeria and AfreximBank.
However, challenges have arisen, including a pricing dispute in September between NNPC and the Dangote Refinery. NNPC alleged it paid N898 per litre for petrol from Dangote, a claim Dangote representatives refuted, labeling it “misleading” due to unresolved pricing terms.
Today’s meeting may see President Tinubu intervening to mediate this ongoing dispute as both parties work to finalize the terms under the new local currency trading framework.
