BREAKING: Planned Closure Of Eko Bridge Suspended By Authorities

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed this on Wednesday, explaining that the earlier decision to shut down the bridge was taken about two weeks ago following the discovery of cracks on parts of the structure, which was built between 1965 and 1975.

According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened, directing the ministry to carry out a fresh assessment to prevent unnecessary hardship for commuters in Lagos.

Umahi said engineers were redeployed to re-evaluate the bridge on Monday, where they concluded that the structure remains stable for now. He stressed that while safety remains a top priority, there is currently no immediate risk requiring a shutdown.

He added that the government agreed to postpone the closure while continuous monitoring is carried out on the affected section to ensure the crack does not worsen, noting that no significant progression has been observed so far.

The minister also confirmed that remedial works will commence within four months, involving additional piling and structural reinforcement to bypass the damaged section, after which more permanent reconstruction will follow.
