Breaking: Sowore Mediates Dispute As Portable Regains Freedom, Charges Dropped
Nigerian human rights advocate, Omoyele Sowore, has played a key role in resolving the legal dispute between Fuji musician King Saheed Osupa Akorede and controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable.
Following Sowore’s intervention, all charges against Portable were withdrawn, leading to his release from detention in Ilorin, Kwara State, where he had been remanded after failing to meet bail conditions. Confirming the development via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Sowore stated: “Portable has now regained his freedom.”
He went on to criticize the Nigeria Police Force, accusing them of overstepping by criminalizing what he described as a civil matter. “I had a long conversation with King Saheed Osupa Akorede today and emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force has no authority to criminalize civil disputes,” Sowore noted.
According to him, Osupa clarified that his intention was not to cause harm but to clear his name. However, he acknowledged that involving the police may have inadvertently contributed to perceptions of oppression.
Sowore’s mediation and Osupa’s willingness to de-escalate the situation culminated in the withdrawal of all charges. “Consequently, Osupa has dropped the case against Portable,” Sowore confirmed, urging law enforcement authorities to refrain from misapplying cybercrime laws in cases that do not warrant criminal prosecution.
