Breaking: Enugu Students Sit For WASSCE Math Exam Despite IPOB Sit-At-Home Order
Despite the sit-at-home order imposed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the southeast, students in Enugu State attended their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Mathematics on Thursday, May 30.
The secessionist group had declared the sit-at-home day to honor those who died during the Nigerian Civil War from July 6, 1967, to January 15, 1970. However, students across the state proceeded with their exams undisturbed.
Our correspondent, who monitored the situation, reported that all secondary schools, including private institutions, held their exams as scheduled. At Akpugo High School in Akpugo and Model Comprehensive Secondary School in Agbani, Nkanu West local government area, the exam began at 9:30 AM with full attendance from registered students.
Egbo Martina Ifeyinwa, the principal of Akpugo High School, noted that the main challenge was for students living far away, who had to stay overnight in the village to ensure timely attendance. “They had to do that to enable them to meet up with the exam time. But, those who live nearby didn’t have any problem coming to the school for the exam,” she explained.
She also praised the local vigilante group, known as the neighbourhood watch, for their efforts in patrolling around the school to ensure safety.
Agbo Chimobi C., the principal of Model Comprehensive Secondary School, Agbani, also expressed gratitude to the state authorities for protecting rural schools from potential disruptions by sit-at-home enforcers.
