BREAKING: Taking A Bow Does Not Mean Confirmation – Akpabio Tells Ministerial Nominees

Senate President Godswill Akpabio clarified on Monday that when ministerial nominees take a bow during their appearance before the Senate, it does not automatically mean they have been cleared or confirmed for any ministerial role.

Akpabio made this explanation during the screening of Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, a nominee from Anambra State. Kennedy-Ohanenye was the first female ministerial nominee to be screened on the first day of the screening process.

She was previously a presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 presidential election but stepped down in favor of former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu.

After Kennedy-Ohanenye’s introductory comments, Senator Ireti Kingibe from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) proposed that she be allowed to take a bow, given her qualifications and achievements. However, Akpabio emphasized that the tradition of taking a bow does not signify confirmation. He stated that nominees take a bow as a formality, and the actual clearance and confirmation process would follow later.

Akpabio also mentioned that the Senate would amend its rules to allow strangers to enter the hallowed chamber and take a bow before proceeding with the confirmation process. He reiterated that taking a bow was just a customary practice, and it did not determine the ultimate confirmation status of the nominee.
