Ireporter recalls that Jega had been serving as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reform.
In September 2024, President Tinubu received a 152-page report from the committee, outlining strategies to address the frequent clashes between farmers and herders in Nigeria.
Following his meeting with the President, Jega explained that the committee recommended a phased approach where ranching and open grazing would coexist in the short term until necessary infrastructure and public awareness facilitated a complete transition to ranching.
Additionally, the committee advocated for modern technology adoption in livestock production.
In October 2024, President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to livestock sector reforms, expressing confidence that the newly established Livestock Development Ministry could achieve “grace from grass.”
Speaking at a two-day Stakeholders’ Consultative Workshop on Livestock Reforms in Nigeria held at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu highlighted increasing foreign investor interest in Nigeria’s livestock industry.
With Jega’s appointment, the government is expected to accelerate policies aimed at transforming the sector and resolving age-old conflicts between herders and farmers.
