BREAKING: ‘War’ In Edo As Deputy Governor Shaibu Runs To Abuja For Protection Amid Rift With Obaseki (DETAILS)

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has taken legal action by approaching the Federal High Court in Abuja to seek protection against potential impeachment and removal from office by his superior, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

In the court filing, Shaibu requested an interlocutory injunction to prevent harassment, intimidation, or embarrassment and to allow him to carry out his duties as the deputy governor, including attending State Executive Council meetings.

The tension between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu has been evident for some time, allegedly stemming from a viral video showing Shaibu with Governor Obaseki’s predecessor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, during the National Assembly inauguration in Abuja.

The motion of notice, filed on July 28, 2023, seeks an order of interlocutory injunction to stop the respondents or their agents from hindering Shaibu’s functions as Deputy Governor until the substantive suit is resolved. The respondents listed in the suit include the Inspector General of Police, State Security Service (also known as Department of State Services), Governor of Edo State, Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, and Chief Judge of Edo State.

Reports suggest that Obaseki excluded Shaibu from important meetings, including summoning all members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state House of Assembly, which fueled speculations about possible impeachment.

Efforts to reconcile the two by a former deputy governor of the state, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, reportedly yielded no positive results.
