The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has rejected demands for Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step down following allegations of sexual harassment made against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan………READ MORE

In a statement released by Rev. Joseph Hayab, Chairman of CAN for the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, the association described the situation as “shameful and unfortunate,” urging national elders to step in and protect the integrity of the National Assembly.

“There is a need for respected figures to mediate. Both Akpabio and Natasha have mentors they hold in high regard. Lawmakers must take responsibility in addressing this matter,” CAN stated during a media briefing in Kaduna.

The religious body firmly opposed calls for Akpabio’s resignation, arguing that no concrete evidence had been established against him.

“Groups demanding Akpabio’s resignation should desist, as no one has been proven guilty in this case. Taking sides will only escalate tensions. While allegations of sexual harassment must be handled with seriousness, they should also be treated fairly,” CAN added.

The association also urged the media to be responsible in reporting on the issue, warning against sensationalism that could further divide the nation along gender and regional lines.

Furthermore, CAN called on political leaders to prioritize governance, stressing the importance of passing the 2025 national budget as a key responsibility of lawmakers.
