Christian Pilgrimage To Israel Suspended By FG Over Safety Concerns

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), has announced the immediate suspension of all Christian pilgrimages to Israel due to escalating security concerns in the Middle East. The decision was confirmed on Tuesday by NCPC Executive Secretary, Stephen Adegbite, during a press briefing in Lagos, shortly after approximately 500 pilgrims returned from the 2025 Main Pilgrimage exercise at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Adegbite stated that the 2025 pilgrimage began on December 29, 2025, with the inaugural flight departing from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Over 4,000 Nigerian pilgrims were successfully transported to the Holy Land during the exercise without incident. For the operation, the Commission deployed a Boeing 777-300 aircraft with a seating capacity of 525, marking the largest aircraft ever used for a Christian pilgrimage airlift in Nigeria.

Describing the exercise as smooth and successful, Adegbite attributed its success to careful coordination and strong government support. However, he explained that recent military developments in Israel and the wider Middle East had necessitated the suspension of further pilgrimages. “You are aware of the latest security developments in Israel and the wider Middle East,” he said, adding that a state of emergency and restrictions on public gatherings in Israel had prompted the Commission to put all pilgrimages, both government-led and private, on hold until the situation stabilizes.

Adegbite emphasised that the safety and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims remain a top priority. The suspension will continue until there is clear assurance of stability in the region. He also cautioned Nigerians against actions that could escalate tensions, noting that the Federal Government prioritises peace and security and urged citizens to exercise restraint to safeguard national security and diplomatic relations.

The NCPC Executive Secretary expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support of Christian and Muslim pilgrimages, while also acknowledging the contributions of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, towards the successful execution of the 2025 pilgrimage. Adegbite encouraged continued prayers for stability in Jerusalem and across the Middle East to prevent a humanitarian crisis, reiterating that while pilgrimage is a significant spiritual duty, the safety of citizens abroad and national interests remain paramount.
