Climate Change Intensified Boko Haram Insurgency  Federal Government

The Federal Government has attributed the worsening of the Boko Haram insurgency to the impacts of climate change, particularly the shrinking of Lake Chad.

According to Naija News, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, stated that environmental degradation, driven by climate change, has significantly contributed to the rise in insecurity in the northern region. “Climate change and security are deeply connected. The drying up of Lake Chad intensified the Boko Haram crisis, while desert encroachment has disrupted agriculture and displaced communities, fueling further instability,” he said.

He added that the government is actively working to mitigate these effects by restoring degraded lands for agricultural purposes, particularly in northern Nigeria.

The Minister highlighted two key initiatives in this regard: the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project and the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW). Both programs aim to rehabilitate arable land and combat desertification by creating a natural barrier in frontline states.

Lawal also expressed appreciation for the European Union’s ongoing support in Nigeria’s climate resilience and sustainability initiatives. He noted that their collaboration extends to the development of the National Circular Economy Roadmap and the protection of National Parks.

“The EU remains a vital partner in our environmental sustainability efforts. This visit reflects our shared commitment to building a greener, safer future,” he added.

The Minister further revealed plans for continued collaboration with the EU, including training legal professionals on environmental law and integrating environmental education into academic institutions.
