Key Factors Driving the Price Hike

Several factors have contributed to the continuous rise in cooking gas prices:

  • Heavy Import Dependence: Over 60% of LPG consumed in Nigeria is imported, making prices highly susceptible to fluctuations in global oil prices and exchange rates.
  • Rising Inflation: Nigeria’s inflation rate, recorded at 32.15% in August 2024, has driven up the cost of goods and services, including cooking gas.
  • Logistical Challenges: Transportation costs and infrastructural deficits further contribute to the rising cost of LPG.

Impact on Households

The escalating cost of cooking gas is straining household budgets, forcing many Nigerians to explore alternative energy sources that may be less efficient or environmentally sustainable.
