Court Rules Against Businessman Seeking ₦500 Million From EFCC Over Alleged Illegal Detention
A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled against a lawsuit seeking ₦500 million in damages from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the alleged unlawful detention of businessman Alhaji Abubakar Ismail Isa……READ MORE
Justice Emeka Nwite, delivering the judgment on Monday, stated that the businessman’s claims lacked merit, as his detention was based on a valid court order. The EFCC presented evidence showing that Isa had initially been granted administrative bail but violated its conditions by failing to honor a second invitation for investigation into financial fraud allegations.
The court emphasized that the businessman was responsible for his prolonged detention, as the anti-graft agency had obtained a court order to keep him in custody while investigating multiple fraud-related charges.
Isa had sought bail, arguing that he had been detained since June 14, 2024, without formal charges. However, the court ruled that his detention was lawful and dismissed his request for compensation.
