Crisis In The Kitchen: Nigerians Cry Out Over Unbearable Gas Prices
Nigerian households are feeling the pinch as the cost of cooking gas, also known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), continues to soar, disrupting budgets across the nation. has surged to a staggering ₦17,000—marking a steep 41.6% rise from ₦12,000 in July 2024. In Abuja, residents report similar price spikes, leaving many struggling to adapt.
Why Are Prices Rising?
The significant increase in cooking gas prices can be attributed to several key factors:
- Global Oil Market Volatility
The cost of LPG is tied to international crude oil prices. Any fluctuations in global markets directly affect Nigeria, which depends heavily on imported cooking gas. - Exchange Rate Woes
The continued depreciation of the Naira against major global currencies has driven up importation costs, passing the burden onto consumers. - Seasonal Demand Surges
Festive periods and holidays often see increased usage of cooking gas, particularly in urban areas, further inflating prices during peak demand.
Current Prices Per Kilogram
The latest retail prices for LPG across Nigeria are as follows:
- 1kg: ₦1,300
- 3kg: ₦3,900
- 5kg: ₦6,500
- 6kg: ₦7,800
- 10kg: ₦13,000
- 12.5kg: ₦16,250
These soaring prices have sparked widespread concern, with many households calling for government intervention to stabilize the market and make cooking gas more affordable.
