Force.

During the session, lawmakers criticized the envelope budgeting system, labeling it inadequate for addressing the operational and security needs of the police. Federal legislators expressed concerns over insufficient funds, which they argued undermine the force’s ability to effectively combat growing security challenges.

The session reached a dramatic point when Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, challenged the process, claiming discrepancies in the budget documents. According to Nwebonyi, the version being read by the IGP differed from what was provided to the committee members.

“We are here to serve Nigerians, and this process must reflect transparency,” Nwebonyi asserted, adding that such inconsistencies harm the credibility of the legislature. Despite explanations from the committee chair, Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed, that the IGP was presenting an abridged version of the budget, tensions flared.

A vote resolved the matter, allowing the IGP to proceed, but Nwebonyi, dissatisfied with the decision, stormed out, followed by other senators in protest.

Hon. Stanley Adedeji, Chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on ICT, later emphasized the need for a more flexible budgeting approach, which would empower the police to respond effectively to national security challenges. He highlighted that improved communication infrastructure and operational planning could only be achieved with adequate funding.

The contentious session underscores the increasing urgency to reform police funding in Nigeria to align with the nation’s evolving security landscape.
