According to Ireporter Online, Ismaeel Ahmed, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), has attributed the recent wave of defections in the opposition party to its internal weakness.

Ahmed made the remarks on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme. He noted that the opposition party has lost nearly all of its governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal being the latest to defect.

Currently, only Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed remain in the opposition, with reports suggesting that Mohammed may soon join the APC.

Commenting on the mass defections, Ahmed said the APC does not actively seek defectors, emphasizing that the trend reflects the opposition’s inability to capitalize on opportunities. “We don’t go out of our way looking for people to come just because they want to defect or we want to weaken the opposition. I thought personally that the opposition was just unbelievably weak,” he said.

Ahmed further expressed his personal reservations about political defections but acknowledged that every new addition to the APC strengthens the party. “I am not a fan of defectors in political parties. The political and democratic spirit in me does not appreciate defections. What I’m saying is that we are merrier every time somebody comes to us,” he added.
