Desperation And Hunger Grip Nigeria, Ahmad Lawan Sounds Alarm
Former Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, expressed grave concern on Monday over the growing hunger and desperation sweeping through Nigeria. Speaking during the launch of a food distribution initiative for vulnerable citizens…Desperation And Hunger Grip Nigeria, Ahmad Lawan Sounds Alarm
in his Yobe North senatorial district, Lawan highlighted the deepening economic crisis that has left many Nigerians struggling.
While distributing grains and food materials to those in need, Lawan acknowledged the urgent need for long-term solutions to Nigeria’s persistent economic and security challenges. He emphasized that such temporary measures, though valuable for providing immediate relief, do not address the root causes of poverty and instability.
“This initiative aims to offer some respite to those in distress, particularly during the holiday season. However, these are short-term fixes. Our focus should be on creating sustainable self-reliance for every Nigerian,” Lawan stated.
Lawan also criticized the detrimental impact of the country’s high interest rates, particularly the current 34% rate, which he described as “callous.” He pointed out that these rates severely hinder local businesses, especially farmers, from competing with international counterparts who benefit from much lower borrowing costs.
“We need to make investment funds accessible. With current interest rates, local businesses and farmers are at a severe disadvantage. How can they compete when other nations offer loans at far more favorable rates?” he asked.
The former Senate President called on state governments to work hand-in-hand with the federal government to tackle the nation’s issues, urging a collaborative approach to sustainable development. He expressed optimism that the economic reforms being implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s administration would begin to yield results in 2025
