Despite Being Imprisoned, Wife and Supporters Campaign for YPP Governorship Candidate

Albert Bassey Akpan, the wife of the Young Peoples Party (YPP) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State, and his supporters launched his campaign on Friday.Asuquo Amba, a retired assistant inspector-general of police and Akpan’s running mate, led the rally.

The campaign rally was held on Friday in the state’s Etim Ekpo LGA.Remember that two weeks ago, the Federal High Court in Akwa Ibom State sentenced Akpan, the lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom Northeast senatorial district, to prison for corruption.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission charged Akpan with six counts (EFCC).Jide Omokore, an associate of Diezani Allison-Madueke, a former petroleum resources minister, was charged with money laundering and receiving exotic cars worth N204 million.

Despite the court’s decision, hundreds of people attended the campaign on Friday.While addressing supporters, Imabong, the wife of the YPP governorship candidate, stated that no prison will stop the people’s desire.

She said, “Senator Bassey Albert – OBA is still on the ballot. [He] will win and not be despaired. No prison is big enough to stop the yearning of the people.”

The chairman of the campaign council, Emem Akpabio on his own part said the senator’s imprisonment is “a temporary setback designed to test their faith and propel the YPP to the height of freedom.”

Akpabio compared the senator’s confinement to that of former President Nelson Mandela and the biblical Joseph.According to Nyeneime Andy, the state chairman of the YPP, the party has grown in Akwa Ibom.
