Domestic Staff Absconds With $51,000 Just Days After Hiring

Confirming the arrest, SP Ayuba Umma, the Zonal Police Public Relation Officer (ZPRO), disclosed that Blessing was recommended for employment by an agent known as Anthony. She commenced her duties on December 23, 2023, in the affluent Lekki area of Lagos.
However, within a mere three days, Blessing absconded with the substantial sum belonging to her employer, fleeing with her husband to Cross River State. The swift disappearance prompted a swift response from law enforcement.
On January 31, detectives from the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department (ZCID) Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan Lagos, apprehended Blessing and her husband following a petition filed by the employer, whose identity has been withheld by the police for security reasons.
During the intensive investigation that ensued, it was uncovered that Blessing had secured the job under false pretenses, providing misleading contact information and using registered phone numbers unassociated with her identity. Notably, she failed to complete her employment application form.
Despite initial denials, Blessing eventually confessed to pilfering $30,000 (equivalent to N44,808,600), admitting to furnishing $20,000 (N29,872,400) to her husband, Bassey.
In a dramatic twist, Bassey also confessed to receiving the stolen funds, a portion of which he purportedly utilized for settling his late mother’s medical expenses, procuring a tipper truck, acquiring two motorcycles, and concluding a construction project in Cross River.
The shocking incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for stringent vetting processes and heightened vigilance when hiring domestic staff, underscoring the vulnerability of employers to insider threats within their own homes.
