Drug Abuse Is A Societal Pandemic, Not Just A Personal Problem – ID Cabasa
Veteran Nigerian music producer, ID Cabasa, has described drug abuse as a societal pandemic whose consequences extend beyond individual users to affect the wider community.
Speaking during the TownSquare programme on TVC Communications, themed “War Against Drug Abuse: Taking Control of Today, Protecting the Future,” Cabasa stressed that substance abuse should not be viewed as a private struggle but as a collective crisis with far-reaching implications. According to Ireporter Online, the producer argued that even those who do not consume illicit substances are indirectly impacted by the social and cultural ripple effects of the menace.
He noted that conversations around drug abuse often dwell on visible symptoms rather than interrogating the root causes driving young people toward substance use. Cabasa explained that while family structures are frequently blamed, the issue is more complex and requires broader introspection. He pointed out that the same households sometimes produce children who do not engage in drug use, suggesting that deeper societal influences are at play.
The producer further called for a reassessment of societal values, contending that the excessive glorification of material wealth fuels both drug trafficking and its subtle promotion in entertainment. He maintained that a culture that equates success with possessions inadvertently encourages illicit ventures aimed at financial gain.
Cabasa also alleged that some financiers linked to drug networks discreetly infiltrate the music industry under the guise of sponsorship, influencing artists to promote certain individuals or lifestyles through lyrics and public mentions. He warned that such strategic patronage blurs the line between creative expression and the normalization of harmful activities.
Challenging critics of drug glorification in music, Cabasa urged stakeholders to move beyond condemnation and invest in positive alternatives. He questioned whether those who oppose the trend are actively funding awareness campaigns or supporting music that promotes healthier values.
He concluded that effectively confronting drug abuse requires value reorientation, responsible content creation, and deliberate investment in initiatives designed to protect young people and secure the nation’s future.
