Edo Language Day Worldwide To Be Celebrated This Weekend

The celebrations will take place both in person and via Zoom online, with events scheduled in Toronto, Canada, and in Edo State, Nigeria.
The initiative to celebrate Edo Language Day stems from the Edo people’s response to the United Nations’ warning about the potential extinction of indigenous languages globally.
With approximately 50% of today’s spoken languages projected to be extinct or seriously endangered by 2100, the Edo Language Day is intended to help prevent the decline of the Edo language.
Nekpen Obasogie, who is a well-known historian, Nigerian cultural activist, educator, and media personality, has been actively promoting the celebration of Edo Language Day.
The idea for this event was first suggested during the worldwide Edo Language Seminar organized by NEBO TV in 2022.
The event will feature various dignitaries from the Great Benin kingdom and other notable figures. Guest speakers and moderators include Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, Former Governor Chief Lucky Igbendion, Aghahowa Obazee from California, Amb. Joe Ehigiamusoe from London, High Priest Osemwegie Ebohon from Benin City, Lady Esosa Edogiawerie from the United Kingdom, and the Uyiedo Cultural Troupe, among others.
The central theme of the event is to develop strategies for preserving, revitalizing, and harmonizing the Edo Language among Edo indigenes worldwide. The initiative aims to promote and safeguard a standardized Edo Language globally.
This year’s Edo Language Day Worldwide event is hosted by Edo Language Day Worldwide (ELDW), NEBO TV Canada, Edo State Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs, in collaboration with the University of Toronto, Canada. The event will take place on August 12th and 13th at the University of Toronto in Canada and the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, with both in-person and virtual components.
