On Wednesday, a soldier tragically lost his life during a robbery incident in Benin City, Edo State, as confirmed by the police.

According to Edo State’s police spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, the robbery occurred at the intersection of First Eastern Circular and Akpakpaba Roads in Benin.

Suspected armed robbers attacked a patrol van carrying the soldier and two of his colleagues. The patrol van was escorting another vehicle loaded with bags believed to contain cash.

The police are actively investigating the incident to uncover the details surrounding the incident.

Nwabuzor stated, “A concerned citizen reported the incident at the local police station. The criminals seized bags, commonly known as ‘Ghana-Must-Go,’ which were suspected to contain cash from the van. Since the soldiers were in their patrol vehicle, they should have been armed. The attackers seemed to have had prior information.”

A witness who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recounted that four assailants in an unmarked Toyota Camry car drove against traffic and approached the army vehicle. Two of the assailants disembarked from the car and began firing at the soldiers. The soldiers attempted to flee their vehicle, but one was hit by bullets and was unable to escape.

The witness also mentioned that if the soldiers had retaliated to the gunfire, more casualties could have resulted, as the area is known for its bustling business activities.
