BREAKING: Again, Tinubu Sends Islamic Leaders To Niger Republic (DETAILS)

Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu, in his role as the Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has authorized the return of a delegation of Islamic leaders (Ulama) to Niger Republic for a follow-up round of talks with the leaders of the recent coup.

This decision was reached on Thursday after President Tinubu held a meeting with prominent clerics, led by Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi.

The clerics had previously engaged in dialogue with the junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani in Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic, just two weeks ago.

In light of his role within ECOWAS, President Tinubu’s decision signals the commitment of the regional organization to engage diplomatically in resolving the crisis that unfolded after the junta seized power from President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, 2023.

In response to the coup, ECOWAS had imposed sanctions on Niger and has also discussed the possibility of employing military intervention if necessary.

While the bloc has authorized the deployment of a “standby force to restore constitutional order” in Niger, it continues to prioritize diplomatic efforts to bring stability to the country during this challenging period.
