Egyptian Star Goalkeeper El-Shenawy Banned For Four Matches

According to IReporter Online, Egyptian national team goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy has been handed a four-match suspension following an alleged physical altercation with a match official after Al Ahly SC’s 1-1 draw against Ceramica Cleopatra FC in the Egyptian Premier League.

Although El-Shenawy did not feature in the match and remained an unused substitute, tensions reportedly escalated after the final whistle when Al Ahly were denied a late penalty claim for a suspected handball during stoppage time. The disagreement led to a heated exchange on the touchline, during which the experienced goalkeeper was accused of making physical contact with the referee.

In an official statement, league authorities confirmed that the player has been sanctioned with a four-match ban alongside a fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds (approximately £700) for what was described as “assaulting the referee by pushing or pulling,” clarifying that the act was classified as physical misconduct rather than violent conduct.

The disciplinary action is a significant setback for Al Ahly SC at a crucial stage of the season, as the club continues its push in the championship play-offs. El-Shenawy, a key figure for both club and country and captain of Egypt at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, is expected to miss a decisive run of fixtures as the title race intensifies.

Al Ahly currently sit third in the league standings with 41 points, trailing leaders Zamalek SC by five points after the opening round of the play-off stage.
