According to official announcements, the crescent moon for the month of Shawwal 1447 was not sighted in Saudi Arabia today. As a result, the 2026 Ramadan fast in the country will extend to 30 days, with Eid Al-Fitr scheduled for Friday, March 20.

In Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, had earlier initiated preparations for the Shawwal crescent sighting. A statement issued by the Sultanate Council, Sokoto, outlined that Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH, would be observed nationwide for moon sighting activities.

Muslims across the country were urged to look out for the new crescent and report any credible sightings promptly. Observers are instructed to notify their local district or village heads, who will then relay verified reports to the Sultan for official confirmation. To facilitate coordination, the Sultanate Council has provided dedicated telephone lines for direct communication of verified sightings.

This announcement follows the long-standing Islamic tradition in which the observation of the Shawwal crescent determines the conclusion of Ramadan and the commencement of Eid Al-Fitr celebrations.
