Electricity Tariffs Could Wipe Out Nigerian Universities By 2025 Vice Chancellor Issues Dire Warning

During preparations for the university’s upcoming 8th and 9th convocation ceremonies, Prof. Kayode Ijadunola expressed concern over the unsustainable financial strain from electricity expenses, worsened by the recent shift to Band A billing by power distribution companies, which has led to a threefold increase in energy costs over the last eighteen months.
Prof. Ijadunola highlighted that the inconsistent power supply forces universities to depend heavily on diesel generators, further adding to their financial burden. He emphasized that without prompt intervention, the rising costs could seriously threaten the academic sector. Elizade University is set to confer 484 undergraduate and 74 graduate degrees this convocation season, including its first-ever doctoral degrees and honorary awards for distinguished contributions to society, including to Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija.
