The past year has seen a worrying number of crashes and near-crashes, raising serious concerns about flight safety. Despite regulatory efforts, Nigeria’s aviation industry has witnessed at least ten major incidents between January 2024 and January 2025.

One of the deadliest incidents was the Sikorsky SK76 helicopter crash, which claimed eight lives. In another alarming case, a Dana MD-82 aircraft skidded off the runway, prompting authorities to suspend the airline for an audit. The situation worsened with additional accidents, including an Embraer 145 aircraft veering off a Lagos runway and an Air Peace flight making an emergency return to Benin after a technical failure.

In December 2024, a Max Air flight had to make an emergency landing in Maiduguri when an engine caught fire midair. Similarly, an Allied Air Cargo aircraft suffered a tyre burst in Abuja, forcing a temporary runway closure.

Even international flights have not been spared, as a United Airlines flight from Lagos to Washington had to make an emergency landing due to technical issues, leaving 38 passengers injured.

Passengers’ Growing Fears

With these repeated incidents, many travelers are questioning the safety of Nigerian air travel. While some have chosen to avoid flying altogether, others say they rely on divine intervention, praying before every flight.

Aviation authorities continue to investigate these accidents, but concerns remain over safety standards, aircraft maintenance, and regulatory oversight. As passengers pray for safe travels, experts are calling for urgent reforms to prevent future disasters.
