Emotional Mourinho Admits Chelsea’s Decline Has Been Painful Ahead Of Bridge Return

Benfica manager José Mourinho has admitted that watching Chelsea endure turbulent years under Todd Boehly’s ownership was “hard” for him, as he prepares for an emotional return to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Mourinho, who guided the Blues to three Premier League titles across two successful spells, will be back in West London for the first time in years. The Portuguese tactician, however, made it clear that he is not preoccupied with the reception awaiting him from Chelsea supporters.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Mourinho said: “Chelsea. Abramovich’s Chelsea, my Chelsea, the Chelsea we built and sustained for many years, was a winning club. It was winning everything with me and then with Ancelotti, with Conte, and with Tuchel. Chelsea was a winning machine. Every season, Chelsea was winning.

“Then there was a big change, with crazy investment and a period of a few years where it looked like they lost direction — too many players, too many millions, an accumulation of players, and a team without a clear philosophy. For a couple of years, it was hard. For someone who loves the club, it was hard.”

Boehly, who led a consortium to purchase Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022, has overseen a turbulent spell at Stamford Bridge, marked by heavy spending in the transfer market and frequent managerial changes.
