Empathetic  Leadership: How Tinubu As Lagos Governor Paid NECO Fees For All SS3 Students Irrespective Of Tribe

Some months after I was sworn in as the governor of Lagos state, I went to see Alhaja (My mum), on getting there, I met some people praying for her while some are still waiting to see her, and I asked her what was happening? She said, “They are all here because they want me to help them pay the NECO fees of their children in SS3”.

I left her place saddened that evening. The following day, I met with my cabinet members and after that, we made a pronouncement that the state government will be paying the NECO fees of all SS3 students in Lagos state public schools irrespective of their tribes and that stands till today ~ Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Empathy is essential in leadership. It is about being able to relate to and connect with people in order to inspire and empower their life.

Empathy is the ability to share and comprehend other people’s emotions. Empathetic leadership is one of the most effective leadership styles for assisting leaders in understanding the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of their constituents.

From the opening statement by the former Lagos State Governor , Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu it highlights the need for Nigeria as a nation to start voting leaders that are emphatic towards the people they intend to lead. Much has always been said about Tinubu and his generosity, while many applaud this others tend to make jest of it saying it was all done for selfish purposes.

For the purpose of this article I would outline three types of Empathy that are recipes for a good leadership.

Cognitive empathy- the ability to understand the emotions of others.

Affective empathy- the ability to share the emotions of others.

Emotional regulation- the ability to regulate one’s emotions.

Cognitive empathy: Tinubu witnessed the misery of those who sought refuge in Mama because they were unable to pay their children’s NECO fees. He recognized their anguish, Mama’s sacrifices, and the gravity of their situation. This is what distinguishes a true leader: the ability to sense the pulse of the people and experience their suffering through their own eyes.

Affective empathy: Oh, how can you be a leader if you don’t make an attempt to address the plights of your team members, or in this case, your constituents? Ofcourse mama may have given them money but Tinubu knew it was beyond just reaching out to the few that came to mama, what of the thousands out there that are facing such challenges who meets them in their hour of need?

Tinubu opted to share these people’s emotions with his cabinet members, which is known as affective empathy—the ability to share the emotions of others.

Emotional regulation: Asiwaju ensured that paying NECO fees for public students became a government act; this is referred to as the ability to regulate one’s emotions by attending to their difficulties conclusively.

The core ideals of public service; integrity, impartiality, non-partisanship, objectivity, dedication to public service, empathy, tolerance, and compassion towards the weaker-sections must all be taken into consideration as we get ready to elect new leaders across the Federation.

Tinubu demonstrated compassion, fairness, and non-partisanship by objectively ensuring that all public school students, regardless of tribe, had their NECO fees paid.

People are not fools to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; he is a brilliant man and of great value.
