Expertise Over Politics: Why Dr. Loretta Ogboro-Okor’s Appointment Is A Strategic Win For Edo State
Benin City | March 19, 2025
In a rapidly globalizing world, the ability of sub-national governments to engage effectively with their diaspora communities has become a key driver of development. Recognizing this, Governor Monday Okpebholo took a decisive step forward by appointing Dr. Loretta Oduware Ogboro-Okor as the Director-General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency — a move that is already redefining the conversation around diaspora engagement, merit-based appointments, and strategic governance.
Dr. Ogboro-Okor’s appointment is a bold, visionary move that reflects Edo State’s commitment to global relevance, competence, and progressive leadership.
Dr. Ogboro-Okor is a UK-trained Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, a Medical Simulation Specialist, and a recognized Global Goodwill Ambassador. Her academic background spans the University of Benin, the University of Edinburgh, and Sheffield Hallam University, where she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Law and Criminology, focusing on illegal migration, human trafficking, and contemporary slavery — issues directly impacting Edo’s diaspora.
Her appointment brings to the table decades of international experience, policy advocacy at the United Nations level, and a proven track record of humanitarian service. In contrast to political appointees lacking global exposure, Dr. Ogboro-Okor offers practical solutions grounded in experience, research, and a passion for public service.
Managing diaspora affairs in the 21st century is not a ceremonial role, and while party loyalty remains essential — which Dr. Ogboro-Okor has consistently demonstrated — it must be complemented by deep knowledge of global systems, the ability to forge international partnerships, and diplomatic finesse — all of which she embodies with distinction.
Countries and regions with thriving diasporas have leveraged individuals with global footprints to attract foreign direct investment, knowledge transfer, and policy support. Edo State deserves no less. Her networks across the UK, Europe, and North America position her as a bridge between Edo’s interests and the world.
Beyond Politics: A Focus on Results and Reform
Dr. Ogboro-Okor’s vision for the Diaspora Agency includes:
- Attracting investments and skills transfer from Edo citizens abroad.
- Developing frameworks to combat illegal migration and human trafficking, issues she’s actively researching at a doctoral level.
- Establishing bilateral partnerships with global institutions to empower Edo’s youth and women through education and entrepreneurship programs.
- Creating a transparent engagement platform for the diaspora to contribute to Edo’s development agenda.
Such a results-driven approach transcends politics and focuses on tangible outcomes for the people of Edo State.
Governor Okpebholo’s leadership has consistently prioritized competence over cronyism. His decision to appoint Dr. Ogboro-Okor is a reaffirmation of his pledge to run an inclusive, efficient, and globally connected government.
This appointment is a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to repositioning Edo State by harnessing top-tier talent. The Diaspora Agency, under Dr. Ogboro-Okor’s leadership, is poised to reflect the excellence and dynamism that define Edo people across the globe.
Dr. Ogboro-Okor is the embodiment of that excellence.
At this critical juncture, it is imperative that all Edo stakeholders rise above political sentiment and support capable leaders committed to progress. Dr. Ogboro-Okor’s appointment is not a threat to party interests — it is a strategic win for all Edo people, at home and abroad.
As we look to the future, the focus must shift from partisan divides to developmental dividends. The people of Edo State — and their global diaspora — deserve leadership anchored in expertise, integrity, and results.
