During a one-day interactive session with Sunday Adebayo, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement on Safe School Initiatives, Dr. Lawal Saad, the Dean of Student Affairs, emphasized the critical need for the prompt rescue of the abducted students.

Expressing deep concern over the escalating cases of student abductions in Zamfara State, Dr. Saad stressed the necessity for enhanced security measures and targeted interventions to safeguard the lives of students and restore confidence in the education sector.

Dr. Saad stated, “The Concern of the Federal University, Gusau is for the government to speed up the efforts towards ensuring the rescue of the female students of the institution who are still in captivity.”

Highlighting the university’s harrowing experiences with seven kidnapping incidents between April 2023 and January 2024, Dr. Saad underscored the fear and uncertainty gripping students, parents, and educators, which undermines the right to education.

In a similar vein, Wadatau Madawaki, the Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government to combat student abductions and foster a secure learning environment.

Madawaki emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of insecurity in Zamfara State, combining immediate security measures with long-term strategies to promote lasting peace and stability.

In response, Sunday Adebayo assured attendees that the government was fully dedicated to securing the release of the abducted female students and urged their parents to remain calm, assuring them that active measures were being taken to address the situation.

The interactive session, attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from secondary and tertiary institutions, state government officials, and student associations, commended security agencies for their efforts against banditry and urged them to intensify actions to eradicate school kidnappings and foster a safe learning environment.
