FG Offers Students Free 100MB Daily Data For Online Learning

The Federal Government has announced plans to provide eligible Nigerian students with 100MB of free data daily to access approved educational websites and digital learning platforms.

According to Ireporter Online, the initiative is scheduled to commence on October 1, 2026, with students in public senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions expected to be the first beneficiaries.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed the plan on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of the Initiative for Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content in Nigeria.

The programme is being developed by the Nigerian Communications Commission in partnership with telecommunications operators and the Federal Ministry of Education.

Under the initiative, participating mobile network operators will provide eligible students with a daily 100MB data allowance for accessing approved educational websites and online learning platforms without incurring additional data charges.

Alausa said the programme would initially focus on students in senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions before being extended to other categories of learners.

The minister explained that the initiative was introduced in response to the financial burden associated with internet access, which continues to prevent many students, particularly those from low-income households, from fully benefiting from online educational resources.

He said removing data charges for selected educational platforms would make it easier for students to use smartphones, tablets and computers as learning tools.

According to the minister, the devices could effectively serve as digital classrooms and libraries, providing students with greater access to educational materials and resources that may otherwise be difficult to obtain.

The Federal Government said the initiative is expected to support digital learning and improve access to online educational content among Nigerian students.
