FG Raises Alarm As Anti-Igbo Protests Erupt In South Africa Over King’s Coronation

Rising tension has been reported in South Africa following the alleged coronation of an Igbo traditional ruler in the Eastern Cape Province. According to reports, unrest broke out after claims that Solomon Eziko was installed as the traditional leader of the Igbo community in the area, sparking outrage among some local groups.

It was gathered that the protests were led by members of ActionSA, who reportedly condemned the development, describing it as an infringement on the province’s sovereignty and constitutional framework. The situation escalated in KuGompo City, where demonstrations turned violent, resulting in the burning of vehicles and properties believed to belong to foreign nationals.

In response to the growing unrest, the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa issued a detailed advisory to Nigerian citizens residing in the country. The notice, titled “Advisory to All Nigerians Living in the Republic of South Africa,” highlighted concerns over what it described as palpable tension and urged nationals to prioritise their safety.

The mission advised Nigerians to remain vigilant, limit unnecessary movement, and avoid interactions that could pose risks. Citizens were also encouraged to maintain a low profile, strictly adhere to local laws, and respect cultural sensitivities within their host communities.

As part of precautionary measures, Nigerians were urged to temporarily suspend socio-cultural gatherings and refrain from making statements that could inflame the situation, particularly on social and mainstream media platforms. They were also cautioned against participating in protests or counter-demonstrations, as well as avoiding conspicuous displays of wealth.

Furthermore, the advisory stressed the importance of promptly reporting any threats to life or property to local security agencies, while also encouraging citizens to seek guidance from the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg when necessary.
