FG Unveils Plans To Strengthen Naira
The Nigerian government is exploring strategies to address the current foreign exchange scarcity and boost the Naira’s value. Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, revealed this during his first press conference in Abuja.
He emphasized the government’s plan to collaborate with the Central Bank (CBN) to attract foreign exchange from various sources, including mopping up foreign exchange outside the system.
Edun also mentioned the possibility of bringing cash held outside the financial system back into circulation.

He highlighted the existence of funds in domiciliary accounts, investments by Nigerians living abroad, and other potential sources of foreign exchange. The goal is to encourage Nigerians to invest in the country rather than foreign economies.
Regarding fuel subsidy removal, Edun mentioned that only N2 billion of the N5 billion offered to each of the 36 states as palliative has been released, as releasing the entire sum at once could lead to inflation. The government aims to provide targeted assistance to the poor and vulnerable while ensuring fiscal sustainability.
Edun also noted efforts to wind down the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and emphasized the government’s commitment to finding alternative sources of funding to reduce reliance on borrowing.
President Bola Tinubu’s economic vision and strategy were highlighted, with a focus on encouraging investment, increasing productivity, economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.
