of stampedes.
Over the past few weeks, tragic stampedes have struck in Ibadan, Okija, and Abuja, with a heartbreaking 67 people—mostly children—losing their lives in desperate rushes for palliatives and holiday giveaways. In Okija, 22 people perished during a Christmas distribution event. Abuja also saw 10 people killed at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church’s annual Christmas food-sharing event. The nation is still grappling with the aftermath of these horrific incidents, which have raised alarms over crowd management at public events.
Despite the tragedy, thousands of families across the country took to parks for a day of fun. In Abuja’s Magicland Park, traffic from eager visitors stretched all the way to the expressway, with affordable ticket prices of N1,500 enticing many. A special N3,500 promotional offer allowed unlimited access to rides, making it a budget-friendly option for many families.
In Lagos, families continued their holiday celebrations in various centers. At Tantalizers, children bounced on inflatable castles while their parents kept an eye on the crowd, ensuring safety despite the stampede fears. At the ShopRite in Ikeja, long queues and crowded entrances hinted at a high demand for festive fun, though safety measures were reportedly in place to prevent chaos.
Port Harcourt witnessed large crowds as well, with government-employed security ensuring safe entry and exit at the Port Harcourt Pleasure Park. The security was visibly tight, with extra personnel stationed at key areas to maintain order.
Meanwhile, Jos and Uyo also saw massive turnout at their amusement parks, with many residents determined to enjoy the festive season despite the looming security concerns.
While some areas like Anambra remained largely empty due to rising insecurity, others like Ogun State had a subdued celebration with a low turnout, as higher costs and the ongoing economic situation kept many home.
With security a major concern for both park-goers and organizers alike, authorities are investigating several of the incidents, including the tragic Maitama stampede, as Nigerians look to strike a balance between festive joy and safety.
